ALGEBRA 2 REGULAR & HONORS
COURSE NUMBER 1200330 & 1200340
COURSE DESCRIPTION: “The purpose of this course is to continue the study of algebra and to provide the foundation for applying algebraic skills to other mathematical and scientific field.” [FDOE]
HONORS CREDIT: THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT AT A RIGOROUS LEVEL ALLOWING ALL STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE TO DO SO, TO PURSUE HONORS CREDIT. BECAUSE THE FLORIDA COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ARE THE SAME AT BOTH HONORS AND REGULAR, THE CONTENT COVERED WILL BE THE SAME. HOWEVER, EXPECTATIONS, MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS, PROJECTS, AND ASSESSMENTS FOR CONTENT MASTERY WILL BE HIGHER IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT HONORS LEVEL STUDENTS ARE MEETING ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ENRICHED AND IN-DEPTH STUDIES. BOTH HONORS AND REGULAR COURSE EXPECTATIONS MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE FLORIDA SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS AND COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: After successfully completing this course, the student will:
· Demonstrate understanding of the different ways numbers are represented and used in the real world.
· Demonstrate understanding of number systems.
· Demonstrate understanding of the effects of operations on numbers and the relationships among these operations, select appropriate operations, and compute for problem solving.
· Use estimation in problem solving and computation.
· Demonstrate understanding and apply theories related to numbers.
· Measure quantities in the real world and use the measures to solve problems.
· Compare, contrast, and convert within systems of measurement.
· Visualize and illustrate ways in which shapes can be combined, subdivided, and changed.
· Use coordinate geometry to locate objects in two and three dimensions and to describe objects algebraically.
· Describe, analyze, and generalize a wide variety of patterns, relations, and functions.
· Use expressions, equations, inequalities, graphs, and formulas to represent and interpret situations.
· Demonstrate understanding and use the tools of data analysis for managing information.
· Identify patterns and make predictions from an orderly display of data using concepts of probability and statistics.
MATERIALS: All students must have the following: a 3-ring binder, dividers, loose-leaf paper, 6-inch ruler, a scientific calculator, pencils, graph paper, and at least one of the following that you will agree to bring: pack of loose leaf paper or a box of tissues.
GRADING POLICY: Grades are cumulative through the end of each quarter and will be based only on personal effort and performance. Student performance will be assessed in four areas: homework and in-class assignments (primarily book work and work book pages), participation, cooperation and effort, tests, and quizzes. Each of these areas will be weighted and used to determine letter grades as follows:

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned virtually each class day and will be checked and reviewed in the beginning of the next class day. You will receive a daily homework grade taking into account: that is has been done completely, neatly, and on time. Answers only will receive a 0.5 for the daily homework. No late work will be accepted without prior approval.
IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS: In-class assignments consist primarily of practice exercises (from book), work book pages used to evaluate a lesson, activities involving technology, SAT practice problems and/or your daily reflection of the topics discussed in class that day. You will be given a homework list for the whole semester. IF YOU ARE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ASK WHAT NEEDS TO BE MADE UP.
CHAPTER TESTS, QUIZZES, AND SEMESTER EXAMS: A comprehensive test to measure students’ mastery of skills and concepts will be given at the end of each chapter. Students will be informed of the scheduled test date at least a week in advance. Please note that my website contains a calendar as well which will also post tentative test/quiz dates. As per District instructions, “Tests in general should be cumulative. For example, the Chapter 3 review and test should include Chapters 1 and 2.” Expect frequent quizzes of smaller portions of Chapters. The Semester exam is made by the District. You will have one opportunity per test or quiz to make corrections, but corrections must be made within the same quarter. All those students that maintain an A average in the first half of the semester are excused from my Midterm Exam!
TUTORING: I am available in my classroom for tutoring during lunch and after school. You just have to show up!
